Box of Nice

A box arranged with self-care items such as a bowl and spoon, a can of chicken soup, an envelope with cash for a dinner out, a little stuffed animal, and encouraging notes from yourself and friends.
Self care in a box.

It’s often toughest to reach out for support when we need it most. In answer to this self-care puzzle, a good friend and I arrived at the idea of sending a package to ourselves at a future time when we could really use some love.

Imagine opening this care package on an otherwise miserable day: A “Box of Nice” composed of simple things which make life good.

When opening the box, you find something like a can of chicken noodle soup with a clean spoon and bowl all ready to go. Layered in there can be a message to yourself or perhaps a card from a friend selected in advance for this exact moment. It doesn’t have to be grand, but investing thoughtful compassion in your future self can only be a good thing.

Creating a box of nice can even be something done with a friend, with each person contributing a few items for the other. I’ve included some item suggestions below — let your imagination be your guide!

  • A candy bar

  • new underwear

  • gift certificate for a one-night stay at a hotel

  • small amount of cash to treat yourself

  • a favorite book

  • a DVD of a favorite movie

  • photos of family and friends

  • photos of a great vacation
