Mementos

Sometimes the humblest objects hold the power of connection. Tangible mementos can serve as a living extension of a person or moment in time in a way a photograph can’t touch. I’ve intentionally kept some things as reminders, but others seem to arrive by chance.

One object in my kitchen is not like the others. Sitting incongruously amongst my coffee grinder, mugs, and tea cups is an unassuming beige sea…shell? rock? Whatever it is, I picked it up a few years back when my sister visited Portland. One of the days we went to the coast, and I picked it up at random and placed it on my kitchen table for a second (which has since turned into two and a half years). It makes me think of my sister’s visit and the freedom of visiting the coast in winter.
