Simply Unbelievable Generosity

As a natural born optimist, I tend to see the good in people. Even so, Shetara Sims’s story blew my socks off.

When Shetara’s eldest daughter was killed in 2012, the detectives on the case provided the family with more than an investigation. "The detectives were really there for us,” Shetara told CNN. “They were there for us more than anyone I can imagine. They did things they didn't have to do. They came to see my kids. They did a lot. They were fathers, therapists. They were everything."

Shetara recently lost her job amid the COVID crisis and was down to her last $7 when she found a dollar bill. She used it to buy a lottery ticket—and won $100. But when her younger daughter Rakiya Edmonson suggested they donate that hundred dollars to the family of a Kansas City police officer who had been wounded in the line of duty, Shetara didn’t hesitate.

She made her donation anonymously, but the police were so moved that they spent days tracking her down so that they could repay her kindness. "To hear her call and just express thanks for no reason other than she's thankful, it's really impactful to us, and it's really touching to us," said Kansas City Police Department Sgt. Jake Becchina. In fact, they were so touched that they started a Go Fund Me campaign for her. As of this writing, they have raised over $150,000.
