Today as I walked down to my little Village to buy some bread, I passed fifty or so people. I usually see, oh, maybe five people on that short walk this time of year. But today people were walking their dogs, pushing strollers, and chatting with friends as they waited outside breakfast cafes. Two people were singing out loud. Of course they were. It’s a sunny morning in January.
Portland is usually gray and rainy in the winter, but we have “sun breaks” for short periods of time (sometimes just fifteen minutes) where the clouds part and the sun shines and the sky is a clean clear blue you can almost smell. When this happens, we empty into the streets and parks and sidewalks and drink our coffee outdoors.
I knew a man whose boss would sometimes walk into the office on an unusually nice day, say, “Sunny Day Holiday!” and give everyone the rest of the day off. I say we emulate that generous soul and take our own Sunny Day Holiday whenever we can, even if it’s just for a quick coffee break outside. Who’s with me?
